Obstetrical Ultrasound

What to Expect with Pregnancy Ultrasounds

After arriving, you and your partner will be seated together in our waiting area. When your name is called, a technologist will escort you to the changing room and help you change.

Once you have changed into the provided gown, a certified technologist will escort you from the changing area to one of the Center’s four ultrasound rooms where she will perform the ultrasound and you and your family will get an opportunity to see the fetal ultrasound images. The Radiologist will review the ultrasound images and the measurements and may come into the ultrasound room if additional images are needed for an optimal evaluation. He/she will generate a detailed report on the Obstetric ultrasound performed and transmit it to your obstetrician. Every couple is given a complimentary ultrasound CD with still images.

First-trimester ultrasound:

Completed at or around 12 weeks

First trimester combined screening (ultrasound and blood work if ordered by your physician) includes two parts:

Part One: an ultrasound will be performed to precisely determine the gestational age of your pregnancy. A measurement of the baby’s neck called nuchal translucency (NT) scan is also performed during the ultrasound

Part Two: a blood test called the Sequential Screen, a two-stage screening that assesses the risk of the baby being born with Down syndrome, Trisomy 18, or Open Neural Tube Defects, is performed at 16 weeks.

Second-trimester ultrasound:

Completed between 18-20 weeks

Performed to assess size and development of the baby, identify possible birth defects, and determine the baby’s gender (only if requested by the parents)

Third-trimester ultrasound:

After the second trimester ultrasound, the need for further ultrasounds is determined by your individual provider.

Ultrasounds may be performed in the third trimester to monitor for growth issues or for women with multiples or high-risk pregnancies.

THE BREAST CENTER

3D Screening mammography is offered to our patients. Results are sent to doctors in most instances the same day or the following day. A small percentage of women are recalled for additional imaging of a finding on the screening mammogram that needs further work up. Our recall rate is typically under 7% exceeding national benchmarks for false positive exams. Appointments for a diagnostic mammogram whether from a screening recall or for a breast symptom are available in 1-3 business days. Results of a diagnostic work up are conveyed to the patient at the conclusion of the work up. Dr. Shetty and his associates will discuss the findings and recommendation with those patients requiring a biopsy or short interval follow-up and answer any questions. A report is then sent to the referring doctor. Our patient navigator, Olivia Torres will assist the patient to coordinate biopsy, obtain surgical consultation in conjunction with your referring doctor’s office as needed. She and Dr. Shetty will be available for any questions that the patient may have.
